Following a lackluster 2024 season, the former skipper of the Miami Marlins, Skip Schumaker, opted to depart from the team. The Marlins have now named their new manager.
In an announcement made on Sunday, Miami has enlisted Clayton McCullough as their latest manager, as reported by Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. McCullough, who previously served as the first base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers and secured the World Series victory in 2024, will step into the managerial role.
Having assumed the position in 2021, McCullough previously held the position of minor league field coordinator for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He also boasts managerial experience, having overseen the Toronto Blue Jays’ minor league system between 2007 and 2014, where he garnered a record of 629-559 while managing at the Rookie and Class-A levels.
This transition marks a significant leap for the former first base coach. McCullough now has the opportunity to showcase his leadership skills at the highest level. Although McCullough’s appointment as an MLB manager is an accolade, the challenges that accompany this role are undeniable.
After making it to the playoffs in 2023 with a record of 84-78, the Miami Marlins underwent a complete restructuring of their front office following a disappointing 2024 season. The appointment of Pete Bendix as their new President of baseball operations signified a shift towards cost-effective strategies, drawing expertise from Bendix’s previous tenure with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Although the Marlins made significant roster changes, such as trading away players like Jazz Chisholm, Tanner Scott, Trevor Rogers, and AJ Puk, their efforts have thus far yielded only three players within the top 100 prospects list according to MLB Pipeline.
Despite the challenges, Clayton McCullough emerged as a highly coveted managerial prospect during the hiring process, having witnessed success with the Los Angeles Dodgers. While Miami may not have the financial resources to acquire players of Shohei Ohtani’s caliber, McCullough’s expertise will be crucial in shaping the future of the Marlins through player development.
The Marlins express confidence in McCullough’s appointment as the ideal candidate to lead the team into the next chapter.
