The Los Angeles Dodgers are continually enhancing their roster through free agency as Spring Training draws near. On Tuesday, they secured reliever Kirby Yates, adding him alongside Tanner Scott as notable acquisitions for the Dodgers bullpen. If this seems like previous news, it’s because it essentially is. He purportedly agreed to a four-year contract last week but the final agreement is a one-year contract, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
“Right-handed reliever Kirby Yates and the Los Angeles Dodgers have reached an agreement on a one-year, $13 million deal, sources inform ESPN,” Passan reported. “Can increase up to $14M with 55 games. The transaction is complete. The Dodgers’ bullpen becomes even more formidable. First on Yates’ successful physical was [MLB.com’s Mark] Feinsand.
Yates, aged 37, has spent a decade as one of the most outstanding relievers in the league. He experienced a career year last season, achieving a 1.17 ERA across 61 appearances for the Texas Rangers. Despite their inability to reach the playoffs, they had a top-tier closer who helped keep the team competitive into the summer.
The Dodgers are anticipated to utilize Scott as their closer following his exceptional season split between the San Diego Padres and Miami Marlins. While Yates may not serve as the closer, his role will be crucial in late-game situations. Additionally, Los Angeles is set to compete in many significant games this season given their extensive offseason activity and aspirations for the World Series.
The last obstacle for the Dodgers and Yates was his physical examination. Although there was no information released about the matter, it took a week to resolve. This predicament cost Yates three years of job security, though he could reap rewards next year if he delivers an outstanding performance.
There are few free agents remaining for the Dodgers to pursue this offseason. If they sign anyone else, MLB fans will really lose their excitement following an unprecedented offseason.
