Joey Votto, a six-time MLB All-Star, has announced his retirement from baseball, concluding his 17-year career with the Cincinnati Reds (2007-2024) as their first baseman.

Votto will forever be recognized as one of the Cincinnati Reds’ greatest players, having finished his career ranked second in home runs (356), third in RBI’s (1,144), and fourth in runs scored (1,171). Additionally, he amassed 2,135 hits (5th-highest) with a .294 lifetime batting average.

In classic Joey Votto style, the retirement announcement was made with a video filmed outside Sahlen Field, the home of his minor league team, the Buffalo Bisons (the Toronto Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate).

“That’s a wrap — I’m out. Officially hanging up my cleats.”

On his Instagram profile, where he shared the news, the Toronto, Canada-born player also penned a goodbye message to his supporters.

Due to his achievements, Votto participated in six All-Star games, clinched a Gold Glove in 2011, and was crowned the NL MVP in 2010. Additionally, he held the title of the active MLB walks leader at the time of his retirement with 1,365 walks.

Throughout the years, fans and teammates not only witnessed his exceptional on-field performance, but also admired Votto for his warm and engaging personality.

Ultimately, Votto’s legacy will endure, showcasing him as the epitome of a respectful Major League first baseman in all facets of the sport.
