New York Mets Prepare For Strategic Move To Acquire Yankees Target Luis Arraez

It’s just January of this year, yet it appears that nearly all teams are heading in various directions for their offseason pursuits. The record-setting Juan Soto astonished baseball enthusiasts, but it called for something equally impressive.

Speculation has linked the New York Yankees to San Diego Padres infielder Luis Arraez. However, the Yankees’ interest seems to be less significant than previously believed. Andy Martino of SNY clarified that the Yankees only made a quick inquiry about Arraez last November. Since that time, they have not sought the issue further. Conversely, the New York Mets are demonstrating a more authentic willingness to potentially acquire the three-time All-Star.

This could specifically occur if their current first baseman, Alonso, chooses to sign with another team. The Mets have been actively consulting with various teams about Alonso’s future. They are prepared to shift to Arraez if needed. The Mets perceive this as a more feasible trade opportunity. Arráez boasts a .323 batting average, making him a suitable temporary solution at first base if Alonso leaves.

Despite Arraez’s defensive statistics not meeting expectations, he ranks among the lowest in outs above average for both second and first basemen. He recently settled an arbitration case with the Padres, agreeing to a one-year, $14 million contract. With his deal set to conclude at the end of the season, the Mets might find themselves in a strong position to strengthen their roster if conditions turn favorable.

The New York Mets Might Reunite With Jose Iglesias

The Mets are crunching the numbers if they choose to part ways with Pete Alonso. There’s a strong chance of reconnecting with beloved All-Star Jose Iglesias this offseason. While Alonso has been pivotal for the team and remains their top priority after acquiring Juan Soto, the Mets are open to exploring alternative solutions for their infield.

If Alonso departs, the Mets are ready to move Mark Vientos to first base, which would create a vacancy at third base. Re-signing Iglesias could offer the Mets an economical solution. Although he has been far from his All-Star status in 2015, Iglesias delivered a remarkable performance last season.

He had an outstanding season with a batting average of .337, an on-base percentage of .381, and an impressive slugging percentage of .830 across 85 games. Furthermore, he is recognized for his exceptional defensive capabilities. For the Mets, adding him to the roster could be a significant advantage, particularly with uncertainties surrounding their current infield arrangement.

Players like Jeff McNeil have been faltering at the plate, and Ronny Mauricio is just returning from an injury. Acquiring Iglesias would not only stabilize the team but also provide the Mets with additional options from the bench. He could be a valuable asset, especially in light of any complications regarding Pete Alonso’s contract discussions.
