The New York Yankees have experienced quite a buying frenzy recently. While they continue to seek additions to their roster, they must resolve several matters as the season progresses. They have opted for a modified squad, especially since they encounter a significant gap in their outfield lineup.
Although captain Aaron Judge’s comeback after clinching his second MVP title establishes a robust base, the exit of star hitter Juan Soto to the New York Mets has left them with limited alternatives. Soto departed with a record-breaking $765 million contract. In order to mitigate concerns arising from Soto’s absence, the Yankees have strategically pursued former MVP Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs.
After the acquisition of Bellinger, speculation intensified regarding who would occupy the left field position. This is particularly relevant as it has become increasingly clear that Alex Verdugo will not be returning to the Yankees. MLB insider Bryan Hoch reported that Verdugo will probably not be re-signed following a subpar season. His career-worst numbers, including a .233 batting average and .647 OPS, have placed him in a vulnerable position heading into free agency.

Now, the Yankees would almost certainly choose to disassociate from Verdugo, whose worth stands at $9 million. Recent reports indicate that they are now focusing on top prospect Jasson Dominguez. Drafted as a highly touted talent at just 16 years of age, Dominguez has been on their radar.

The New York Yankees Need To Accumulate Cash
The Yankees are presently maneuvering through a challenging financial landscape as they strive to maximize their roster while remaining beneath the luxury tax threshold. With salary commitments already approaching $299 million, there’s little leeway for substantial acquisitions. Ownership has expressed a desire to keep expenditures under the $301 million limit. These limitations have imposed considerable pressure on the front office to deliberate carefully about their future directions.

Recently, Jack Curry from YES Network suggested there might be a path for the Yankees to release some funds. He mentioned starting pitcher Marcus Stroman as a potential trade target. Considering Stroman’s contract situation, which entails an $18.5 million commitment for 2025 and a player option for 2026, trading him could offer a much-needed financial respite.
Stroman’s performance last season further complicates the choice. With a 4.31 ERA and a decline in effectiveness, he has turned into a bit of a liability for the Yankees. Early signs of his decreasing velocity hinted at impending troubles. While he once appeared as a valuable asset, the reality is that his worth has diminished, making a trade increasingly enticing. If the Yankees can effectively move Stroman and absorb some of his salary, they could create additional flexibility in their budget.
