The Philadelphia Phillies clinched the National League East title and closed out the 2024 season with the second-best performance in baseball. Despite their triumphant run, the Phillies were eliminated from the postseason by the New York Mets in the NLDS. This premature departure has prompted the team to reassess its lineup. Considering a major overhaul, the Phillies are contemplating trading All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm.
If Philadelphia decides to part ways with Bohm, the team might acquire the seasoned third baseman Alex Bregman from the Houston Astros. While this is merely speculation for now, Bregman could serve as a dependable replacement at the hot corner. Noted for his suitable swing at Citizens Bank Park, solid defensive skills, and ample postseason experience, as per Buster Olney on X.
John Middleton, the owner of the Phillies, expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s playoff performance. Bohm, in particular, had a subpar display, managing only a 1-13 record in the Division Series and even sitting out Game 2. Although Bregman is slightly older than the 28-year-old Bohm, turning 31 at the upcoming season’s commencement, his dual World Series victories could prove invaluable in terms of performance and leadership qualities.
The Philadelphia Phillies may potentially substitute Alec Bohm with Alex Bregman in a frenzy of free agency
Irrespective of the Phillies’ verdict regarding Bohm, the team is actively pursuing free agents this offseason. Philadelphia aims to secure an outfielder and a top-notch reliever. While pitching emerged as a strength in the initial half of the season, the bullpen’s unreliability has prompted the team to seek a high-caliber addition.

Following their defeat in the Division Series against the Mets, the Phillies extended the contract of their manager, Rob Thomson, by a year. Evidently, the organization attributes the second-half breakdown to the players as they have retained the leadership of Thomson until 2026.
Assuming the managerial role in 2022 after serving as the team’s bench coach for five seasons, Thomson guided Philadelphia to the World Series in his inaugural season and reached the Championship Series in 2023. Although 2024 witnessed his most triumphant regular season, the team suffered a 3-1 loss in the NLDS.
Bohm was among the three starting infielders representing the Phillies at the All-Star Game. He boasted a .280/.332/.448 slash line this season with 44 doubles, 15 home runs, 97 RBIs, and 3.0 WAR across 143 games for Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Bregman delivered a .260/.315/.453 performance for the Astros, accruing 30 doubles, 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 4.1 WAR in 145 games.
