The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs competed in a critical showdown on Tuesday. The shining star of the Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani, and the rising star of the Cubs, Shota Imanaga, shared a heartwarming moment as they clashed on the field.
Ohtani and Imanaga, renowned as two of the finest Japanese players in baseball history, faced off in the first inning. Ohtani graciously tipped his helmet towards Imanaga, who reciprocated with a smile and a tip of his cap.
Following their interaction, Imanaga managed to induce Ohtani to pop out to shortstop Dansby Swanson.
This marked the second encounter between the two Japanese luminaries in the Major Leagues. Back on April 8, during Imanaga’s second appearance in the Major League, he successfully kept Ohtani hitless in two at-bats and even struck him out once. Imanaga pitched four scoreless innings that day, helping the Cubs triumph over the Dodgers with a score of 8-1.

Ohtani and Imanaga were not the lone Japanese representatives in that Tuesday’s game. Star pitcher for the Dodgers, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, returned after nearly a three-month absence due to a right triceps injury. Outfielder Seiya Suzuki took on the role of designated hitter for the Cubs.
This historic instance marked just the second occasion in Major League Baseball history when four Japanese players started a game.
The previous event dates back to May 4, 2007, when the New York Yankees featured outfielder Hideki Matsui and pitcher Kei Igawa facing off against outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and catcher Kenji Johjima of the Seattle Mariners. In that game, the Mariners secured a victory with a score of 15-11, with Suzuki and Johjima contributing four runs and five hits. Matsui achieved a 1-3 record with two walks and a home run in a valiant effort for the Yankees, despite the loss.
Such instances resonate positively in the world of baseball and play a significant role in its global expansion. Major League Baseball acknowledges this impact and perceives matchups between the Dodgers and Cubs as compelling viewing in Japan.
Hence, these two teams are scheduled to kick off the 2025 season in Tokyo in what promises to be a highly anticipated event.
