Shohei Ohtani, without hesitation, showed he was unfazed by the Major League Baseball playoffs in his debut on Saturday evening at Dodger Stadium.

Trailing by three runs early in Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres, Ohtani blasted a 97 mph fastball from Dylan Cease over the right field pavilion to tie the score.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Ohtani’s performance, stating, “I have never witnessed such clutch moments like the ones he creates for us. It’s truly remarkable.”

Ohtani’s three-run homer set the stage for the Dodgers’ 7-5 victory in Game 2 of the series on Sunday night. He also contributed with a single to center field and scored another run as the Dodgers mounted a comeback from a 5-3 deficit.

The Padres initially took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Manny Machado, their star player.

Ohtani, who had his first playoff at-bat in the first inning, expressed his energy was fueled by the sold-out crowd of 53,028 and the unique playoff atmosphere.

According to Padres manager Mike Shildt, Cease’s lapse in execution on the second-inning pitch allowed Ohtani’s strength to come through with the bat.

Ohtani admitted he was thrilled by the intensity of the playoff game’s ambiance, saying, “Navigating through the regular season is challenging, but playoffs bring a whole different intensity. I was thrilled to embrace the moment.”

Cease’s struggle became evident by the time Ohtani stepped up in the second inning, leading to the pivotal three-run homer that shifted the momentum in favor of the Dodgers.

Roberts emphasized the impact of Ohtani’s home run, stating, “It reignited our team and energized the fans from the first pitch. Ohtani thrives on that energy, and it was a game-changing hit.”

Ohtani concluded the game with a 2-for-5 performance, including the homer and three RBIs, although he struck out swinging in his final two at-bats.

Against left-handed reliever Adrian Morejon, Ohtani showcased his versatility by delivering a crucial single, demonstrating his prowess against both right-handers and lefties.

Shildt indicated his trust in Morejon against Ohtani, emphasizing the strategic decision in pitching against the talented Dodgers player.

Ohtani’s remarkable season achievements, including being the first to achieve a 50/50 season with 54 homers and 59 steals, have justified the substantial investment the Dodgers made in him as a free agent.

Saturday night showcased Ohtani’s impact on the Dodgers’ top lineup, as players like Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, who previously struggled in postseasons, contributed significantly alongside him.

The offensive prowess of the top three hitters, including Ohtani’s homer and RBIs, propelled the Dodgers to a promising start in the series and hinted at more success to come in the postseason.

This is merely a glimpse of what the future holds for Ohtani and the Dodgers in the ongoing postseason journey.

Prior to the game, Roberts announced that veteran pitcher Clayton Kershaw would not be returning to the field for the Dodgers in 2024 due to a persistent bone spur issue in his left big toe.

Roberts confirmed, “We are closing the chapter on Kershaw’s season for this year. The toe injury has worsened, and Clayton’s physical condition doesn’t support a return to play.”

Kershaw mentioned the possibility of surgery but indicated he would make a decision post the postseason regarding his future, including his player option with the team for 2025 valued at $10 million.

“I do not wish to be plagued by injuries constantly,” Kershaw expressed, acknowledging his dilemma. “While pitching is my passion, evaluating my health will be crucial in any decision moving forward.”
