Trade Speculations For Starling Marte In 2025

New York Mets supporters are preparing for an emotional conclusion to the offseason. First baseman powerhouse and National League Wild Card Series standout Pete Alonso is anticipated to sign with another team in free agency. Once considered a reliable option to hold the franchise’s all-time home run mark, the “Polar Bear” may potentially leave Flushing this winter. However, the organization might also have to say goodbye to another key offensive player.

“The Mets informed Starling Marte last month that they would attempt to trade him to a more favorable situation, but at the same time could envision a role for him if he remains,” reported Mike Puma from the New York Post. “Even with Jesse Winker’s return, Marte is viewed as a right-handed DH opportunity. Currently, there’s no progress on a trade. Marte’s contract has a $19M obligation.”

The 36-year-old outfielder is commencing the last year of his contract. After a solid 2024 season where he hit .269 with seven homers and 16 stolen bases in 94 games, relocating Marte is more viable than it was the previous year. Nonetheless, owner Steve Cohen might need to absorb part of his salary to finalize a transaction.

What will the Mets decide regarding Starling Marte?

Marte has a couple of glaring concerns affixed to his uniform, particularly his health and defensive shortcomings. He has not participated in 140 games during a season since 2018 and recorded a concerning -8 outs above average in the field last season. These two challenges are unlikely to improve with age.

When evaluating the trade market for the two-time All-Star, it might be most logical for New York to keep him on board for at least the first half of 2025. Re-signing Jesse Winker does not eliminate the necessity for outfield depth. Starling Marte could still provide some value in a non-regular role.

However, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns prides himself on being budget-conscious. He may find it more sensible to unload a significant portion of Marte’s remaining salary for minimal compensation. It is important to note that the Dominican Republic native recorded a .277 batting average and achieved nine RBIs in 13 playoff games for New York in 2024. His experience is something Stearns and the front office will carefully consider as they deliberate on their next steps.

Once the notion of a potential departure is openly discussed, it becomes challenging to progress as a cohesive unit. The Mets may look to transition standout talent Mark Vientos to first base if Pete Alonso indeed departs for another team, thus providing them the chance to pursue a third baseman like Nolan Arenado. Alternatively, management may opt to stick with Brett Baty for the time being while shifting its focus towards acquiring another outfielder like Anthony Santander.

Each scenario necessitates financial commitment and roster adaptability, both of which could be complicated by Marte’s status. Supporters are anxiously awaiting Stearns to reveal his forthcoming strategy.
