Yoan Moncada Shares Hopes and Resilience On Opening Day Despite Thumb Injury

The Los Angeles Angels took a gamble this offseason when they brought in Yoan Moncada. Known for his talent, Moncada has unfortunately been plagued by injuries throughout his career, making fans cautious yet hopeful. Originally, he was poised to be LA’s starting third baseman, but a recent thumb issue sustained during spring training might put that on hold. The situation has many on the team and in the fanbase anxiously biting their nails as they wait for updates on his status.

Despite the uncertainty, Moncada remains optimistic about joining his teammates for Opening Day. “I feel like I’m gonna be ready for Opening Day… That’s what I’m aiming for right now. So that’s my mindset,” he stated, displaying the determination that has characterized his approach—even in the face of adversity. Manager Ron Washington seems to echo that hope, stating that the injury is just a deep bruise. “We all recover from deep bruises differently, so I’m hoping he’s a quick recover-er. That’s great news,” Washington mentioned. His words hint at a broader sense of support within the organization, as they rally around a player who has faced a string of setbacks.

Moncada, arriving on a one-year, $5 million deal after the Chicago White Sox opted out of his $25 million club option for 2025, is looking to turn his career around with the Angels. The move came after eight challenging seasons with the White Sox, where he was a part of a historically low-performing team that suffered a staggering 121 losses last season. However, despite the cloud of that dismal record, Moncada’s own situation was made more difficult as he missed a shocking 150 games during 2024 due to a significant left adductor strain, an injury that sidelined him for nearly the entire season.

Injuries have become a familiar adversary in Moncada’s journey, a fact that resonates particularly well with anyone who has ever faced setbacks in their own pursuits. Since 2022, he’s dealt with various ailments, from oblique strains to hamstring pulls, foot issues, and back problems, which have hindered his once-promising trajectory. Now, just when he could be finding his footing, he faces yet another obstacle—a deep bone bruise incurred from an awkward mishap of hitting his own thumb against his glove.

Though he has yet to receive clearance for hitting or throwing, Moncada’s resolve remains strong, and he’s eager to get back on the field. “I’m just day to day… Based on that, we’ll be implementing more things to get better and get ready,” he explained, hinting at a plan to return to form. It’s a sentiment that anyone who has had to work through adversity can empathize with—progress can sometimes feel painstakingly slow, but it’s essential to remain patient and committed to improvement.

Eliminating any obstacles is paramount, especially because Moncada has won the starting third base position over established veteran Anthony Rendon, who also carries his share of injury woes. Should Moncada not be ready by the season opener, the Angels would pivot by shifting Luis Rengifo to third and letting newly acquired infielder Tim Anderson take the reins at second base.

As we await news on Moncada’s recovery, there’s a shared breath held among fans, teammates, and coaches alike. Moncada’s journey, filled with ups and downs, reflects a larger narrative familiar to many—struggling through challenges while holding onto hope. Whether he is in the lineup for that much-anticipated Opening Day or not, it’s clear that behind the statistics and the games played is a story of resilience that captures the essence of sports as more than just a competition; it’s about the human spirit’s ability to rise, fall, and rise again.
